21 dead, dozens buried in Naga landslide



CEBU (Updated) -- At least 21 people were declared dead, nine were injured, and over 50 others were believed to have been buried alive when a portion of a mountain collapsed in a barangay in the City of Naga, Cebu, early morning Thursday, September 20.

The landslide buried around 24 houses, sending rescuers scrambling to find survivors after some sent text messages pleading for help.

As of 8 p.m. Thursday, 15 of the fatalities were identified as:

Among those injured were:

1. Rose Ann Lobiano, 40

5. Jocelyn Siton, 38

6. Basilla Omambac, 58

7. Sidney Ravanes, 35

8. Babyjane Ravanes, 8

The massive landslide affected Barangay Tina-an and a neighboring village.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing as several others remained missing as of 8 p.m. Thursday, September 20, according to the City of Naga Police Station.

Baltazar Tribunalo, head of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said earlier that immediate evacuation has been implemented in Barangays Tina-an, Inoburan and Naalad.

City of Naga Mayor Kristine Vanessa Chiong declared five barangays, namely, Tina-an, Naalad, Mainit, Pangdan and Cabungahan, under state of calamity.

More than 100 residents of the three barangays have been evacuated to the Enan Chiong Activity Center where they received immediate assistance.
